The Superman theatrical cartoons are a series of 17 animated Technicolor shorts released by Paramount Pictures between 1941 and 1943. Fleischer Studios produced the first 9 (1941-1942) at their Miami, Florida studio; after Paramount took control and reorganized the operation as Famous Studios, the final 8 (1942-1943) were produced in New York City. Lavishly budgeted (the first short cost about $50,000, the rest roughly $30,000 each) and made using rotoscoping for realistic motion, they are considered among the finest animation of Hollywood's Golden Age; the first short, "Superman," earned a 1941 Academy Award nomination for Best Short Subject (Cartoons). Bud Collyer voiced Superman and Joan Alexander voiced Lois Lane in the Fleischer entries, and the cartoons introduced Superman's now-iconic ability to fly. All 17 shorts are in the public domain in the United States because National/DC Comics failed to renew the copyrights (the original 35mm masters and ancillary rights are held today by Warner Bros.).
