"Felix Turns the Tide" ist ein US-amerikanischer animierter Stummfilm-Kurzfilm aus der Felix-the-Cat-Reihe, erschienen 1922. Die satirische Handlung greift den Ersten Weltkrieg auf: Die Ratten erklaeren den Katzen den Krieg, woraufhin sich Felix freiwillig zum Kriegsdienst meldet, nachdem ihm seine Freundin Kitty Kat versprochen hat, auf ihn zu warten und ihn nach seiner Rueckkehr zu heiraten. An der Front erlebt Felix Grabenkaempfe und Bombardements; eine Ratte feuert aus einem Heissluftballon eine Kanone auf die Katzen-Schuetzengraeben ab. Mit Einfallsreichtum schiesst sich Felix selbst aus einer Kanone in den Ballon, wirft die Ratte hinaus und kappt das Seil, an dem weitere Ratten hochklettern, sodass die Katzen die Oberhand gewinnen. Dabei erinnert sich Felix an die zugesagte Hilfe seines fruheren Besitzers, des Metzgers. Der Film verbindet Messmers Verwandlungs-Gags mit pointierter Kriegssatire. Felix the Cat war der erste echte Zeichentrick-Star und bis zu Mickey Mouse die populaerste Cartoon-Figur der Welt. In this World War I satire, the rats declare war on the cats, so Felix enlists after his girlfriend Kitty Kat promises to wait and marry him on his return. At the front he faces trench warfare and bombardment, including a rat firing a cannon at the cats' trenches from a hot-air balloon; Felix fires himself from a cannon into the balloon, throws the rat out, and cuts the rope so the climbing rats fall, turning the tide. He also calls on his former owner, the butcher, for promised help. Felix was the first true animated star and the most popular cartoon character before Mickey Mouse.
