Alfred J. Kwak is a children's animated comedy-drama series based on a stage show by Dutch singer-songwriter Herman van Veen, who created the duckling character and wrote the episode synopses. The 52-episode series was produced by Dennis Livson's Telecable Benelux B.V. as an international co-production with Dutch broadcaster VARA, Germany's ZDF, Spain's Televisión Española and Japan's TV Tokyo, with animation handled by Telescreen Japan in Tokyo. Character and production design came from German artists Harald Siepermann and Hans Bacher, while Japanese staff including director Hiroshi Saitō and writer Akira Miyazaki executed the animation. It premiered on TV Tokyo on 3 April 1989 and later reached the Netherlands (1989), Germany (ZDF, 1990) and Spain (1991), and is remembered for tackling mature themes like discrimination, dictatorship and environmentalism.
