Die Deutsche Wochenschau was the unified weekly newsreel of Nazi Germany, produced by Universum Film AG (UFA) in Berlin and released in cinemas from June 1940 until 22 March 1945 (the last theatrical edition, No. 755). It was created by consolidating the four previously competing German newsreels — Ufa-Tonwoche, Deulig-Tonwoche, Tobis-Wochenschau and the Fox Tönende Wochenschau — into a single propaganda instrument. Its predecessor, the Ufa-Tonwoche, had run as UFA's weekly newsreel from 1925 (with synchronized sound from 1930) until it was merged in 1940. Throughout, production was supervised and censored by the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda under Joseph Goebbels, who used the newsreels to shape wartime public opinion; these films are now a core part of the audiovisual record of the Nazi era, preserved primarily by the German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv).
Produktion / Production: Produced and edited by Universum Film AG (UFA) at its main building on Krausenstraße in central Berlin, Germany (synchronization and finishing done there until November 1943). NOTE for newsreels: the recording/event LOCATION is the place depicted in each issue (e.g. the Eastern Front, Stalingrad, Normandy, North Africa, occupied Poland), NOT Berlin where it was edited.
