In English: UFA-Tonwoche No. 491, dated 31 January 1940, falls in the first war winter and the unusually harsh ice winter of 1939/40. A key economic item is the construction of a large hydrogenation plant in northern Germany, intended to turn coal into synthetic fuel and make Germany independent of petrol imports — a core aim of Nazi autarky and war-economy policy. The reel documents the ice winter in the Netherlands, where icebreakers keep shipping lanes open and ice-bound islanders are supplied by air. From the home front, front-line soldiers attend a figure-skating competition in Düsseldorf featuring the world pair-skating champions. Further items cover German-Soviet trade after the 1939 pact (grain and oil trains at border crossing stations) and the resettlement of roughly 128,000–135,000 ethnic Germans from Volhynia and Galicia into the Reich, part of Nazi population and occupation policy in occupied Poland. Pioneer engineers build an auxiliary bridge, and the reel claims U-boat successes. This is contemporaneous, state-directed propaganda. Restored in 8K (4K UHD) by remAIke.TV, free on frai.tv.
Die Deutsche Wochenschau was the unified weekly newsreel of Nazi Germany, produced by Universum Film AG (UFA) in Berlin and released in cinemas from June 1940 until 22 March 1945 (the last theatrical edition, No. 755). It was created by consolidating the four previously competing German newsreels — Ufa-Tonwoche, Deulig-Tonwoche, Tobis-Wochenschau and the Fox Tönende Wochenschau — into a single propaganda instrument. Its predecessor, the Ufa-Tonwoche, had run as UFA's weekly newsreel from 1925 (with synchronized sound from 1930) until it was merged in 1940. Throughout, production was supervised and censored by the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda under Joseph Goebbels, who used the newsreels to shape wartime public opinion; these films are now a core part of the audiovisual record of the Nazi era, preserved primarily by the German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv).
Produktion / Production: Produced and edited by Universum Film AG (UFA) at its main building on Krausenstraße in central Berlin, Germany (synchronization and finishing done there until November 1943). NOTE for newsreels: the recording/event LOCATION is the place depicted in each issue (e.g. the Eastern Front, Stalingrad, Normandy, North Africa, occupied Poland), NOT Berlin where it was edited. Use Berlin/UFA only for the "studio/production" field; use the depicted event location for the per-video location tags..
