Die Deutsche Wochenschau Nr. 708 erschien am 29. März 1944 und ist eine zeitgenössische Propaganda-Wochenschau des Dritten Reiches. Ein Schwerpunkt der Ausgabe sind die Kämpfe an der Südfront bei Cassino (Monte Cassino) in Italien, wo seit Januar 1944 die alliierte Offensive gegen die deutsche Gustav-Linie verlief und im März 1944 die dritte Schlacht um Monte Cassino mit der weitgehenden Zerstörung von Stadt und Kloster Cassino stattfand; die Wochenschau zeigt die zerstörte Stadt und das Kloster, deutsche Verteidigungskämpfe sowie Bilder des anglo-amerikanischen Gegners. Ein weiterer Block dokumentiert den Einmarsch deutscher Truppen in Ungarn: Im Rahmen des 'Unternehmens Margarethe' besetzte die Wehrmacht ab dem 19. März 1944 Ungarn; die Aufnahmen zeigen deutsche Panzer und Kettenfahrzeuge auf dem Marsch durch ungarische Ortschaften in Richtung Budapest. Weitere Teile zeigen den Stellungsbau an der finnischen Front bei Schneesturm, Kampfhandlungen im Raum der Pripjet-Sümpfe an der mittleren Ostfront sowie die Ausbildung von U-Boot-Besatzungen der Kriegsmarine. This contemporaneous Third Reich propaganda newsreel centres on the fighting on the southern front at Cassino (Monte Cassino), Italy, where the third battle of Monte Cassino and the extensive destruction of the town and abbey took place in March 1944; it shows the ruined town and monastery, German defensive fighting and footage of the Anglo-American opponent. In Berlin on 21 March 1944, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels receives officers and soldiers from the Cassino battles who are on home leave. Another segment documents the German entry into Hungary (Operation Margarethe, from 19 March 1944), with tanks and tracked vehicles moving through Hungarian towns toward Budapest. Die Deutsche Wochenschau was the unified weekly newsreel of Nazi Germany, produced by Universum Film AG (UFA) in Berlin and released in cinemas from June 1940 until 22 March 1945 (the last theatrical edition, No. 755). It was created by consolidating the four previously competing German newsreels — Ufa-Tonwoche, Deulig-Tonwoche, Tobis-Wochenschau and the Fox Tönende Wochenschau — into a single propaganda instrument. Its predecessor, the Ufa-Tonwoche, had run as UFA's weekly newsreel from 1925 (with synchronized sound from 1930) until it was merged in 1940. Throughout, production was supervised and censored by the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda under Joseph Goebbels, who used the newsreels to shape wartime public opinion; these films are now a core part of the audiovisual record of the Nazi era, preserved primarily by the German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv).
